ADVISORY

Thursday, September 21 | 9AM - 1PM

NEWRY – On Thursday, September 21, the Maine Tourism Association (MTA) and Sunday River will host 175 students from Mountain Valley High School in Rumford, Buckfield Junior - Senior High School in Buckfield, and Telstar High School in Bethel.

Throughout their visit, students will be grouped together for a guided tour of Sunday River, immersing themselves in firsthand experiences alongside seasoned team members from various resort departments. From snowmaking to lift operations, accounting, and public safety, students will delve into the heart of the hospitality industry. This unique exposure is designed to provide them with a comprehensive and authentic insight into the wide array of careers available within the resort.

As one of the largest employers in the area, Sunday River holds a deep sense of pride in its connection to the local community and is committed to supporting young individuals in finding meaningful opportunities within Maine after they graduate.

The partnership between the school districts, the Maine Tourism Association, and Sunday River has been made possible through a generous grant from the Maine Department of Labor. Sunday River's aim in extending this opportunity is to assist these students in paving the way for a successful future, where they can make meaningful contributions not only to their local community but also to the broader world.

In November of 2022, the MTA was awarded a grant from the Maine Department of Labor with the aim to educate people (ages 16-24) about the variety and wealth of employment and career opportunities in the Tourism & Hospitality Industry. As part of MTA’s efforts to build interest from the upcoming generation of employees, MTA's Workforce Development team is creating partnerships between Maine schools and tourism businesses, facilitating everything from school presentations to field trips to internships for students with our tourism businesses.

The Maine Tourism Association is the state’s largest advocate for all tourism-related businesses. Incorporated in 1922, MTA members include lodging, restaurants, camps, campgrounds, retail, outdoor recreation, guides, tour operators, amusements, transportation and cultural and historical attractions. MTA also operates seven State Visitor Information Centers from Kittery to Calais, and annually produces the state’s official travel planner, Maine Invites You Businesses and schools that are interested in getting involved with the Maine Tourism Association’s programming are encouraged to visit its workforce development website, www.tourismforme.com, for more information.
